Defending America And Dixie

Description

As a Southerner (meaning a person born in the American Southland - also known as Dixie) I keep hearing people from the rest of the United States who claim that honoring the Dixie Cross battle flag (Confederate battle flag Army of Northern Virginia) makes you "un-American" somehow.
Many even go so far as to say that one cannot honor being Southern and be an American at the same time.

Well maybe they should tell that to these Southern men. US soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq who are fighting to protect the United States from terrorism?

The fact is that to most Southerners honor this flag is a living symbol of Southern identity.
In every major American war since World War One Southern-born men and boys have carried this banner with them overseas and displayed them as reminders of their home and family.
Often times this flag is displayed respectfully alongside or beneath (never above) the flag of the United States of America.

Respect goes both ways.
